Chapter 9

T he elevator arrived at our floor, but I could barely see the opulent surroundings. Porters and hotel staff bustled in to show us to our rooms, but the whole-time mom and I stared at one another with mixtures of shock, fear and for me at least, elation. The idea of being a father terrified me, but the idea of starting a family with this gorgeous, amazing woman was electrifying.

As I was stepping into the large room, I noticed crestfallen expressions on Mia and Olivia’s faces and realized this affected them too. What would happen to the girls if this got out? What kind of life could they expect with the shame and controversy attached to their names?

Cold reality settled in my guts and as I thought about the consequences of what we’d done, and their ramifications in the future, my elation faded. Sally and the hotel staff showed off the extensive suite. There was a small bedroom for me and a palatial one the women could share.

Numb, I dropped onto the bed and pulled the stiff comforter over myself. The scrubs they’d given us from the hospital were comfortable but not warm, and the room had a chill to it. The noise died down outside my room, as the staff filtered out, but my eyes remained wide, my mind spinning.

The mattress felt too soft beneath me. I shifted and rolled, but no matter how I lay, I couldn’t seem to get comfortable. In the end, I pulled the sheets off the bed and curled up on the ground.

An hour later, I still hadn’t fallen asleep, my mind unable to quiet its churning thoughts, when there came a tapping at the door. I picked my head up and peered over the bare mattress to see my mom standing there in the doorway.

“I couldn’t sleep,” she said.

From the fragility in her voice, I could tell she’d been working up the nerve. Raising the sheet, I made space for her. The smile that swept across her face melted my heart and the coldness in my room faded somewhat.

“Us too!”

The sound of a door swinging open sounded, followed by the patter of light feet, and then Mia and Olivia were pushing in around mom. My stepmom frowned at her daughters, but the frown faded in an instant when she saw them crawl in and cuddle next to me.

“You girls are impossible,” she whispered. She shot a look over her shoulder and slipped into the room and carefully lay beside me. “Sally said they’ll have attendants outside in case we need anything… people ready to gossip to the papers if they hear anything untoward.”

“We can’t have that.” I said, my little grin matched my mom. “We should talk about-.”

“Not now,” she said, a troubled look passing over her face. “We will, baby… but not now. It’s all just too much.”

“I think it’s a miracle,” Olivia said, reaching over and gripping her mom’s hand.

“I miss the island,” Mia said, her jaws creaking as a yawn escaped her mouth.
